DESCRIPTION

An attractive English ironstone plate attributed to Spode, dating to the Regency period, circa 1820. The plate features an elaborate Chinoiserie-inspired design combining rich cobalt blue with finely detailed iron red decoration. The centre displays a distinctive cross-shaped arrangement of stylised floral motifs, surrounded by scrolling foliage and a densely patterned iron red ground. Concentric decorative bands lead to a broad border of blue flowers and scrolling leaves against a white background, finished with a brown enamelled rim. The balanced composition, intricate ornament and strong colour contrast reflect the decorative character of early 19th-century English ceramics inspired by Chinese export porcelain.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

During the Regency period, Spode and other Staffordshire manufacturers produced ironstone and stone china wares inspired by Chinese porcelain, combining fashionable Oriental designs with durable English ceramic bodies. Cobalt blue and iron red were particularly popular decorative colours, often used in elaborate floral and geometric compositions. This plate is an appealing example of the Chinoiserie taste that influenced English tableware during the early 19th century and would complement a collection of Regency ceramics, Spode stone china or antique blue and red transfer-decorated wares.
