DESCRIPTION

An English pearlware plate decorated in blue with a detailed chinoiserie landscape centered on a prominent pagoda style temple beside water. Trees, smaller buildings, rocks and distant landscape elements complete the picturesque scene. The broad border is richly decorated with floral, foliate and geometric motifs in varying shades of blue. The plate displays characteristic glaze crazing and attractive variations in the transfer decoration, giving it a strong period appearance.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Blue transfer printed pearlware became an important part of English ceramic production during the 19th century, with chinoiserie landscapes remaining particularly popular. Pagodas, imagined Asian architecture and elaborate borders reflected the continuing British taste for exotic decorative subjects.
