DESCRIPTION
An 18th century English porcelain bowl attributed to John Pennington of Liverpool, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue on a creamy white ground. The exterior features freely painted floral and foliate sprays with Chinoiserie influence, while the interior is centred by a small botanical motif. A repeating blue foliate border decorates the inside of the rim. The bowl stands on a circular foot and retains the characteristic irregularities of early hand-painted English porcelain.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
John Pennington was associated with Liverpool porcelain production during the later 18th century, when the city’s potteries produced blue and white wares strongly influenced by Chinese export porcelain. Small bowls of this type reflect the distinctive hand-painted decoration associated with Liverpool’s porcelain tradition.
