DESCRIPTION
An attractive antique English Copeland ironstone plate dating to circa 1840s, decorated in a richly coloured Chinoiserie Imari floral pattern. The central medallion features a large stylised peony surrounded by scrolling foliage and delicate floral sprays, complemented by three elaborate arrangements of flowers across the interior. The decoration combines vibrant cobalt blue, iron red and yellow enamels with gilt highlights, creating the distinctive appearance associated with early Victorian Imari-inspired ceramics. A decorative blue border with intricate scrolling motifs, stylised flowers and gilt detailing surrounds the gently shaped rim. The underside bears a blue printed Copeland Late Spode mark together with an impressed factory mark. A decorative example of early Victorian English tableware with strong Oriental influences.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Copeland continued the celebrated Spode ceramic tradition following the acquisition of the business in 1833, producing finely decorated earthenware and ironstone during the Victorian period. Imari-inspired patterns remained highly fashionable in mid 19th-century England, reflecting the continuing influence of Chinese and Japanese porcelain on British ceramic design. The Copeland Late Spode backstamp is consistent with the early Victorian period and supports the circa 1840s attribution. An appealing example for collectors of English ironstone, Copeland, Spode and Chinoiserie ceramics.
