DESCRIPTION
A fine Georgian English Bilston enamel hinged box dating to circa 1780. The deep royal blue body is mounted with dark metal fittings and an oval painted enamel lid depicting doves in a landscape, enhanced with gilt details. The inscription “Esteem the Giver” appears prominently within the composition, a sentimental message characteristic of Georgian gift and token boxes. The white enamel interior contrasts attractively with the rich blue exterior. Of particular interest is the presence of a workman’s or shop mark, adding further character to this small 18th century enamel object.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Bilston in the English Midlands became an important center for decorative enamel boxes during the 18th century. Small boxes bearing sentimental inscriptions were popular as personal gifts and tokens of affection, and surviving signed or workshop-marked examples are of particular collecting interest.
