DESCRIPTION

A Chinese white metal circular plaque or shallow plate worked with detailed relief decoration. The central scene depicts a mythical tortoise-like creature among stylized waves and clouds, carrying an elaborate sacred vessel or symbolic structure on its back. Fine punched, chased and engraved textures enrich the background and raised ornament. The broad border displays contrasting dark patination and worn areas that give the piece a distinctive aged character.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

The tortoise has a long tradition in Chinese decorative art as a symbol of longevity and endurance. Combined with clouds, waves and sacred imagery, the composition draws upon established Chinese Daoist and auspicious symbolism.
