DESCRIPTION

A finely detailed 19th century Chinese Qing Dynasty watercolor painting on pith paper depicting a standing warrior or guard holding a long polearm. The figure is rendered with careful attention to facial features, costume and stance, with a purple tunic, red sash, dark trousers and pale leg coverings. Strong colors and delicate brushwork give the composition considerable decorative character. The painting is presented within a blue inner mount and a dark framed and glazed surround. A distinctive example of Chinese export painting from the Qing period.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Chinese paintings on pith paper became particularly associated with the 19th century export trade, depicting figures, occupations, costumes, plants and scenes of Chinese life for overseas collectors. Their exceptionally delicate support allowed artists to achieve the characteristic bright colors and finely defined details seen in this example.
