DESCRIPTION
A finely painted 19th century Chinese Qing Dynasty watercolor depicting a rural scene associated with traditional silk production. Two figures are shown among trees and shrubs, one carrying a large bundle of cut branches while the other crouches to gather vegetation. Their clothing, woven hats and surrounding landscape are rendered with delicate line work and strong blue, green, purple and brown pigments. The composition belongs to the tradition of Chinese export paintings illustrating occupations, crafts and stages of production for Western collectors. Presented within a pale blue textile border and an attractive black frame with gilt decorative details.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Chinese export paintings depicting silk production documented the various activities involved in one of China’s most important traditional industries. Such occupational and production scenes became popular with Western collectors during the Qing period and are valued today for their combination of decorative quality and historical interest.
