DESCRIPTION
An atmospheric watercolour and ink study of a Tyrolean Alpine village, closely associated in subject and manner with the architectural watercolours for which British artist Samuel Prout (1783-1852) became celebrated. The composition depicts a substantial traditional chalet with projecting timber balcony, surrounded by villagers in regional dress, trees and a dramatic mountainous background. The handling of the architecture, figures and softly washed mountain scenery gives the work a distinctly 19th century picturesque character. An apparently identical composition has been encountered online under the descriptive title “A Tyrolese Scene” with the artist given as anonymous, and no firm Samuel Prout attribution has been established for the present example. It is therefore offered conservatively as “After Samuel Prout” rather than as an authenticated work by the artist. Presented under glass with a grey mount and gilt finished frame.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Samuel Prout (1783-1852) was an important British watercolourist particularly admired for picturesque architectural subjects encountered during his European travels. He became Painter in Water-Colours in Ordinary to King George IV and subsequently Queen Victoria. Alpine towns, old buildings and continental street scenes became closely associated with his artistic reputation. This unsigned Tyrolean composition is offered as a work after or in the manner of Prout unless further documentary evidence establishes a firmer attribution.
NOTES
Please review all photos carefully as they form part of the description. The Samuel Prout association is stylistic and is not presented as a confirmed attribution.
