DESCRIPTION
Chinese watercolour painting on pith paper, dating to the 19th-century Qing period, depicting five ladies gathered around a table playing a board game described as Chinese chess. Two seated players face one another while companions watch, with a standing attendant holding a red tray and white teacup. Their robes are painted in rich orange, green, yellow, pink and blue, with finely detailed borders, jewellery and floral hair ornaments. Blue stools and an elaborate red patterned carpet complete the colourful interior scene. Presented behind glass in a narrow, textured gilt frame.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
The detailed group composition offers particular interest through its depiction of leisure, dress and domestic furnishings. The expressive faces, intricate textile patterns and strong colours give the painting considerable decorative appeal despite the visible fragility and damage to the pith.
