DESCRIPTION

A Chinese carved soapstone pillar surmounted by a stylized guardian beast finial. The stone displays attractive natural variations of russet, orange, ochre and cream tones, which have been incorporated into the carved form. The compact beast is modeled seated above a tall rectangular pillar with defined facial features, limbs and flowing carved details. The polished surfaces contrast with areas of age-related wear, giving the piece a pleasing decorative character typical of later Chinese hardstone carving.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Guardian beast and lion-inspired forms have a long decorative tradition in Chinese art and were frequently adapted for seals, finials and scholar objects. This late 20th century example combines the traditional motif with the naturally varied coloring of soapstone.
