DESCRIPTION
A large Chinese porcelain vase and cover decorated in the famille verte palette in a Kangxi revival style. The baluster body features a prominent phoenix among flowering plants, leafy branches and garden vegetation, painted in vivid green, blue, iron red and aubergine enamels. Elaborate decorative panels encircle the shoulder, while the neck carries a repeating floral and scrolling border. The domed cover is similarly decorated with flowers and foliage and finished with a blue glazed finial. The extensive decoration and tall elegant form give the vase a strong decorative presence characteristic of 19th century interpretations of earlier Kangxi porcelain.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Famille verte decoration became particularly associated with Chinese porcelain of the Kangxi era and was extensively revived during the 19th century. Phoenix and flowering garden subjects remained popular decorative themes, combining auspicious imagery with the colorful enamel palette admired in earlier Qing porcelain.
