DESCRIPTION

A small Chinese blue and white porcelain vase dating to the Qing Dynasty, Guangxu period, in the late 19th century. The body is painted in underglaze cobalt blue with prominent floral and leafy decoration above a repeating panel border around the lower section. Applied chilong dragons curl around the shoulder and neck, giving the compact vessel a distinctive sculptural character. The combination of freely painted blue decoration and modeled dragon ornament reflects traditional Qing ceramic decorative vocabulary. Despite the substantial old restoration to the neck, the vase retains considerable decorative appeal and period character.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Chilong, or archaistic hornless dragons, have a long tradition in Chinese art and were frequently incorporated into Qing Dynasty ceramics as auspicious decorative motifs. Small blue and white vessels with applied dragons are collected for their combination of painted porcelain decoration and sculptural modeling.
