DESCRIPTION

A Chinese porcelain tankard dating to the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, decorated in famille rose enamels with gilt highlights. The principal decoration features a finely painted portrait of a lady within a circular medallion, surrounded by radiating ornament and an elaborate gilt floral garland. Scattered famille rose flower sprays and a decorative border enrich the white porcelain ground. The distinctive loop handle is embellished with applied floral terminals, adding sculptural character to this attractive 18th century piece.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Chinese porcelain tankards of the Qianlong period were produced in substantial numbers for export to European markets, often combining Chinese decorative techniques with forms suited to Western use. Portrait medallions, famille rose enamels and gilded ornament are characteristic features sought by collectors of 18th century Chinese export porcelain.
