DESCRIPTION
Chinese porcelain saucer dating to the Qing Dynasty and Qianlong period, decorated in an attractive Imari palette of underglaze cobalt blue, iron-red enamels and gilt highlights. The interior presents a lively garden composition with flowering peonies, leafy branches, a butterfly and a prominent pierced scholar’s rock. Further plants and garden elements fill the foreground, while a delicate geometric border frames the rim. The combination of freely painted underglaze blue and bright overglaze decoration gives the saucer a particularly decorative 18th-century character.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Chinese Imari porcelain was produced for both domestic and export markets, combining underglaze cobalt blue with iron-red enamels and gilding. Garden scenes featuring peonies, butterflies and scholar’s rocks draw upon established Chinese decorative themes associated with nature and the cultivated garden.
