CONDITION

DESCRIPTION

Fine Chinese porcelain saucer decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with flowering branches and foliage. The cavetto features a central floral spray enclosed by a double line border and diaper rim pattern. The reverse is covered in an attractive cafe au lait glaze with an underglaze blue sea shell mark inside a double circle. Elegant shallow form with delicate hand painted decoration throughout. A pleasing Qing period porcelain example.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Blue and white porcelain with cafe au lait glazed backs became popular during the Kangxi period and was widely exported to Europe. Shell marks within double circles are seen on Qing porcelain influenced by Kangxi period decorative traditions. Pieces of this type are appreciated for their refined painting and warm contrasting glaze tones.
