DESCRIPTION

A colorful Chinese porcelain saucer decorated with an elaborate arrangement of butterflies, flowering plants and scrolling vines. The design uses bright pink, orange, yellow, blue, turquoise, green and purple enamels outlined with fine dark details against a white ground. Several large butterflies are incorporated among stylized blossoms and curling tendrils, creating a lively decorative composition associated with Canton-inspired export wares. The underside is relatively plain and carries a red Jingdezhen and Made in China mark within the foot.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Butterflies and flowers are long-established decorative subjects in Chinese art and were widely adapted for colorful export and decorative porcelain. The red Jingdezhen and Made in China marking identifies this as a 20th century production rather than an earlier Qing Dynasty example.
