DESCRIPTION
An attractive Chinese porcelain plate dating to the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, 18th century, decorated in delicate Famille Rose enamels with traditional floral and symbolic motifs. The central composition features flowering pink peonies beside a cobalt blue scholar’s rock, accompanied by slender bamboo stems painted in fine iron red. The broad rim is decorated with colourful floral sprays in pink, green, blue and orange, complemented by a fine gilt edge and an elegant iron red border surrounding the central scene. The combination of soft enamel colours, detailed floral painting and generous white porcelain ground gives the plate a refined and balanced appearance. The composition is particularly interesting for its possible marriage symbolism, combining peonies and bamboo in a decorative arrangement associated with harmony and prosperity.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
During the Qianlong reign (1736-1795), Chinese porcelain frequently incorporated symbolic botanical motifs expressing wishes for happiness, prosperity and family harmony. In a traditional marriage interpretation, bamboo may represent the male or husband through its strength, upright character and resilience, while the peony may represent the female or wife through its associations with beauty, honour and prosperity. Together, these motifs can be interpreted as an auspicious expression of marital harmony, although a specific wedding commission cannot be confirmed. This plate offers an interesting example of the decorative symbolism found in 18th-century Chinese Famille Rose porcelain.
