DESCRIPTION
An attractive Chinese porcelain plate attributed to the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty, 18th century, decorated with a colourful combination of underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze Famille Rose enamels. The central composition features a large flowering peony surrounded by delicate blossoms, curling branches and richly painted blue foliage with fine gilt accents. Soft pink, green and iron red enamels provide contrast against the white porcelain ground. The gently rounded sides are decorated with a narrow floral and foliate band, while the broad outer rim displays further flowering branches and scattered blossoms within a fine blue border. The balanced arrangement and detailed brushwork give the plate an elegant decorative character associated with early Qing export porcelain.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
The Yongzheng reign (1723-1735) is particularly admired for the refinement of Chinese porcelain painting and the development of delicate Famille Rose enamel palettes. Floral compositions featuring peonies were popular decorative subjects, traditionally associated with prosperity, honour and wealth. The combination of cobalt blue decoration, coloured enamels and gilt detailing reflects the artistic variety of early 18th-century Chinese porcelain. Despite its restoration, this plate remains an interesting decorative example for collectors of Qing Dynasty ceramics and Chinese export porcelain.
