DESCRIPTION
A richly decorated Chinese porcelain plate attributed to the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, featuring exceptionally vivid clobbered polychrome enamels and gilt detailing. The central composition displays large flowering peonies among cobalt blue foliage, accompanied by a bird, butterflies and smaller blossoms in iron red, pink, yellow and green. An elaborate iron-red and blue geometric lattice border surrounds the centre, incorporating floral reserves and delicate gilded highlights. The broad outer rim is decorated with scrolling flowers against a brilliant yellow-green ground, creating a particularly bold and colourful appearance. The reverse retains a restrained decoration of blue and iron-red floral sprays, contrasting with the heavily embellished front. An attractive decorative example of Chinese export porcelain with considerable visual character.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Clobbered porcelain refers to Chinese ceramics subsequently embellished with additional coloured enamels and gilding, particularly for the European export market during the 18th and 19th centuries. Earlier blue and white porcelain was frequently transformed into more elaborate decorative wares to satisfy changing European tastes. Peonies traditionally symbolise wealth, prosperity and honour in Chinese art, while birds and butterflies contribute to themes of natural beauty and happiness. The combination of vivid enamels, intricate latticework and gilding makes this plate an interesting example of the decorative evolution of Chinese export porcelain.
