DESCRIPTION

A late Qing Dynasty Chinese porcelain plate decorated in colorful Canton enamels. The central field is divided into figural garden scenes depicting groups of people among trees, architecture and landscape elements, arranged around a small floral medallion. Large stylized lotus motifs punctuate the composition, while the broad cobalt blue border is densely decorated with scrolling green foliage, flowers and auspicious bat motifs. The combination of vivid enamels, detailed figure painting and an elaborate border gives the plate a highly decorative late 19th century character.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Canton decorated porcelain was produced extensively during the Qing Dynasty for both domestic and export markets. Figural scenes combined with flowers, bats and lotus motifs are characteristic of the richly ornamented enamel decoration favored during the later 19th century, with bats traditionally associated with good fortune in Chinese decorative art.
