DESCRIPTION

An attractive Chinese export porcelain deep plate dating to the Qing Dynasty, Qianlong period, 18th century. Decorated in traditional underglaze cobalt blue with a detailed waterside landscape featuring pagodas, pavilions, a small arched bridge, trees, distant mountains and birds in flight. The central composition is surrounded by a geometric lattice band and a richly decorated floral and scrollwork border. The plate has a gently curved deep form with a broad rim, displaying the characteristic blue and white decoration associated with Chinese export porcelain of the period. The surviving historical staple repairs add evidence of its age and previous use.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Chinese blue and white export porcelain was highly sought after in European markets during the 18th century, particularly during the Qianlong reign (1736-1795). Landscape scenes with pagodas, bridges and waterside buildings were popular decorative subjects. The old metal staple repairs are an interesting example of historical ceramic repair techniques, reflecting the value placed on preserving porcelain objects. A decorative example for collectors of Qing Dynasty export ceramics and antique blue and white porcelain.
