DESCRIPTION
Chinese Kangxi porcelain plate originally decorated in underglaze blue and white, later enriched with vivid enamels and gilding in the Regency taste. The central floral composition combines the original cobalt painting with added iron-red, turquoise, green and yellow decoration. Bold floral borders surround the well, with yellow cartouches against a green ground and a dotted iron-red outer band. The reverse bears three iron-red floral sprays and a later pseudo-Chinese mark, added as part of the clobbered decoration.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Clobbering involved adding coloured enamels and gilding to existing porcelain to suit changing decorative tastes. This example brings together an early Chinese blue-and-white body and later English decoration attributed to London, preserving two distinct stages of its history.
