DESCRIPTION
An attractive Chinese porcelain plate attributed to the Qing Dynasty, Kangxi period, with later clobbered enamel decoration. The central composition features a decorative flower basket surrounded by flowering plants, bamboo, pierced scholar’s rocks and garden scenery, originally painted in underglaze cobalt blue. The plate has been further embellished with vibrant overglaze enamels in pink, green, orange and yellow, together with gilt highlights. A broad decorative border displays colourful floral sprays, scrolling motifs, geometric lattice panels and ornamental reserves against a rich blue ground. The combination of traditional Chinese blue and white porcelain with later European-style clobbered decoration creates a distinctive and highly decorative appearance. The reverse retains traces of enamel decoration and old metal staple repairs.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Clobbered porcelain refers to Chinese blue and white wares that were later embellished with additional coloured enamels and gilding, often to suit changing European decorative tastes during the 18th and 19th centuries. Kangxi-style porcelain was particularly valued for its quality and finely painted underglaze blue decoration. Flower baskets, bamboo and scholar’s rocks are traditional Chinese decorative subjects associated with refinement and natural beauty. The surviving historical staple repairs provide additional interest as evidence of earlier ceramic conservation. An appealing example for collectors of Chinese export porcelain, clobbered ceramics and antique decorative plates.
