DESCRIPTION
A Chinese Famille Rose porcelain figurine depicting the Daoist immortal Zhong Li Quan, dating to the 19th century Qing Dynasty. The standing figure is modelled with a pale expressive face, long black beard and distinctive headdress, holding a turquoise fan against his shoulder. He wears a richly coloured iron-red robe decorated with stylised motifs, above bright lime-green trousers. The figure stands on a turquoise rectangular pedestal embellished with a small pink floral design. The vibrant enamel colours, traditional symbolism and expressive modelling reflect the decorative character of Chinese porcelain figures produced during the Qing period.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Zhong Li Quan is one of the legendary Eight Daoist Immortals, known collectively as the Ba Xian, who symbolise longevity, happiness and spiritual attainment. Traditionally regarded as the chief of the Eight Immortals and sometimes associated with the Han Dynasty, Zhong Li Quan is believed to have discovered the elixir of life and possessed the ability to transform mercury and lead into precious metals. He is commonly depicted with a fan, which according to Daoist legend could restore the souls of the dead and bring them back to life. One traditional story tells how Zhong Li Quan used his fan to dry the soil of a widow’s husband’s grave, enabling her to remarry, before later revealing himself as the deceased husband to test her sincerity. The Eight Immortals became especially popular subjects in Chinese decorative arts during the Yuan and subsequent dynasties, appearing on porcelain, paintings and temple furnishings. They were believed to possess the power to convey immortality and blessings to others, making their representations desirable symbols of good fortune and spiritual protection.
