DESCRIPTION
A colourful 19th-century Chinese Qing Dynasty porcelain figurine representing Cao Guo Jiu, one of the legendary Eight Daoist Immortals. The standing figure wears a vivid lime-green robe decorated with finely painted dragons in turquoise and blue enamels, with stylised waves along the lower border. His expressive face features a long black beard, finely painted eyebrows and a traditional black official headdress. The figure stands on a turquoise rectangular pedestal decorated with a small floral motif. The bright Famille Rose palette, detailed modelling and traditional symbolism give this piece considerable decorative appeal.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
The Eight Daoist Immortals are legendary figures associated with the Penglai Islands, also known as the Islands of the Blessed, where they were believed to have attained immortality through their knowledge of nature and Daoist practices. Together they symbolise happiness, longevity and immortality, and became especially popular during the Yuan Dynasty. They were widely represented in Chinese art, with temples and shrines dedicated to their worship.
Cao Guo Jiu, traditionally dated to 930-999 AD, is regarded as the patron saint of theatre and is associated with nobility and official rank. According to legend, he was the son of a military official and uncle of the emperor. Disturbed by his brother’s misconduct, he withdrew into the mountains to study Daoism, renouncing worldly honours and wealth. He was eventually influenced by the immortals Lu Dongbin and Han Xiangzi and joined the Eight Immortals. His traditional attributes include official court robes, a headdress and castanets or ceremonial tablets, reflecting his association with the imperial court and theatrical arts.
