DESCRIPTION
An attractive Chinese porcelain figurine depicting Cao Guo Jiu, one of the legendary Eight Daoist Immortals, dating to the Qing Dynasty, 19th century. The standing figure is modelled wearing elaborate ceremonial robes decorated in vibrant Famille Rose enamels, predominantly turquoise, green, pink, yellow and cobalt blue. The finely detailed costume features geometric patterns, floral ornament, decorative borders and a distinctive animal-mask belt ornament. The figure has a delicately painted face with a serene expression and an elaborate headdress adorned with coloured ornaments. The sculptural modelling of the flowing robes and richly patterned garments gives the piece considerable decorative character. The underside has an unglazed base with a central hollow opening, typical of hollow-moulded porcelain figures.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Cao Guo Jiu is traditionally recognised as one of the Eight Immortals of Chinese Daoist mythology, a group associated with longevity, happiness and spiritual attainment. According to legend, Cao Guo Jiu was connected to the imperial court before withdrawing from worldly life to pursue Daoist teachings. He is commonly represented wearing official robes and a court headdress, with castanets or ceremonial tablets as his identifying attributes. The Eight Immortals became popular subjects in Chinese decorative arts, particularly porcelain figures produced during the Qing Dynasty. This example reflects the colourful enamel decoration and elaborate costume detailing associated with 19th-century Chinese figurative porcelain.
NOTES
The figurine has a missing hand and chipped areas to the headdress, together with minor age-related enamel wear and surface imperfections. The identification as Cao Guo Jiu is based on the traditional costume and supplied reference material. Please review all photos carefully as they form part of the description.
