DESCRIPTION

Chinese export porcelain deep plate decorated in underglaze blue with a butterfly, iris, anemone, and caterpillars derived from engravings by Maria Sibylla Merian.

The central composition is surrounded by a decorative cavetto border of intertwined leaves and flower heads, with floral and foliate scrollwork on the rim.

This design belongs to the celebrated group of Chinese export porcelains inspired by European botanical and natural history illustrations.

The finely executed painting demonstrates the successful adaptation of Merian’s scientific imagery for the European export market.

A highly collectible example of Chine de Commande porcelain reflecting the exchange of artistic ideas between Europe and China.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) was a German-Dutch botanist, naturalist, and artist whose pioneering studies of insects and plants transformed natural history illustration.

Research has shown that this porcelain design combines elements from several engravings published in Merian’s Raupenbuch and later works, creating a unique decorative composition for the export trade.

Merian-inspired Chinese export porcelains are particularly sought after for their connection to early scientific illustration and the flourishing trade between China and Europe during the 18th century.
