DESCRIPTION
An attractive 18th century Chinese export porcelain cup dating to the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, decorated in the Mandarin famille rose palette. The exterior features an elegant figural scene depicting two Chinese figures in flowing pink and purple robes within a garden setting, surrounded by delicate trees and architectural details. The reverse displays a decorative cartouche containing a finely painted puce landscape with buildings and trees, framed by elaborate gilt scrollwork, floral motifs and coloured enamel borders. The rim is finished with a narrow brown and gilt band, while the interior retains a simple white glaze. Despite the loss of its original handle, the cup preserves much of its colourful decoration and characteristic 18th century Chinese export porcelain charm.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Mandarin famille rose porcelain became particularly fashionable during the Qianlong period, when Chinese workshops produced elaborate figural designs for the European export market. Scenes of courtly figures, garden gatherings and architectural landscapes were often combined with richly gilded borders and puce enamel cartouches. This cup represents the decorative sophistication and cross-cultural appeal of 18th century Chinese export porcelain, making it an interesting example for collectors of Qing Dynasty ceramics.
