DESCRIPTION
An attractive 18th century Chinese export porcelain tea bowl dating to the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, decorated in the Mandarin famille rose style. The exterior features charming figural scenes depicting Chinese figures in traditional robes, including a figure with a bird perched on a raised hand, accompanied by another figure holding a slender object. The reverse shows a further figure in a pink robe beside a flowering tree, with a bird resting on the outstretched hand. The decoration is painted in turquoise, orange, yellow, pink and grey enamels, with delicate black outlines and touches of gilt detailing. The interior is predominantly white glazed, finished with a fine iron-red decorative border beneath the rim. The bowl has gently flared sides and a circular foot, displaying the characteristic form of Chinese export tea wares.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Mandarin famille rose porcelain was particularly popular during the Qianlong period, when Chinese workshops produced colourful enamelled wares for European export. Scenes featuring figures, birds and garden landscapes reflect the decorative tastes of the 18th century and the fascination with Chinese daily life and leisure activities. This tea bowl is an appealing example of Qing Dynasty export porcelain, with an unusual bird-handling subject and attractive traditional enamel decoration.
