DESCRIPTION

A Chinese porcelain cup bowl of compact rounded form, decorated with freely painted copper red floral and scrolling foliage motifs beneath a soft pale glaze. The decoration extends around the exterior and displays attractive variations in tone caused by the firing process. The interior is left largely undecorated, emphasizing the simple form and contrasting with the expressive exterior design. Blue painted marks are visible to the recessed base. An appealing decorative example with a distinctive studio pottery character.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Copper red decoration has a long history in Chinese ceramics and is particularly admired for the variations in color produced during firing. This 20th century example combines that traditional palette with an informal floral design and compact functional form.
