DESCRIPTION

An attractive Chinese Qing dynasty famille rose porcelain bowl of elegant shaped rectangular form, raised on a corresponding pedestal foot and decorated with a vibrant turquoise ground. The exterior is richly ornamented with colourful scrolling foliage, stylised lotus blossoms and auspicious bat motifs, painted in shades of pink, blue, yellow, green and iron red. Shaped white reserves contain delicately painted floral sprays, providing an attractive contrast against the brilliant turquoise background. The interior is finished in a matching turquoise glaze, while the pedestal foot features a decorative green band of stylised waves and upright leaves. The underside bears an iron-red six-character Tongzhi reign mark within a square seal. A decorative and characterful example of Chinese famille rose porcelain, displaying the elaborate ornamentation and colourful enamel palette associated with Qing dynasty ceramics.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Famille rose porcelain became an important feature of Chinese ceramic production during the Qing dynasty, particularly for its extensive range of colourful overglaze enamels and richly detailed ornamentation. Bats are traditional Chinese symbols of happiness and good fortune, frequently appearing alongside flowers and scrolling foliage in auspicious decorative compositions. The distinctive turquoise ground, shaped outline and elaborate enamel decoration reflect the decorative tastes associated with 19th-century Qing porcelain. The Tongzhi reign mark adds further collecting interest, although the precise date of manufacture has not been independently authenticated.

NOTES

Please review all photos carefully as they form part of the description. The approximately 5 cm hairline crack extending from the rim is an important condition consideration and is reflected in the condition assessment. The bowl bears a Tongzhi reign mark, with the attribution based on its visible characteristics rather than independent authentication.
