DESCRIPTION

An attractive Chinese stoneware ewer style vase inspired by Liao Dynasty ceramic traditions, dating to the 20th century. The vessel features a tall, tapering neck rising from a rounded lower body, surmounted by a distinctive twisted arched handle. The exterior is finished in a rich amber glaze with warm golden and brown tonal variations, creating an appealing aged appearance. Applied vertical ribs decorated with raised circular bosses extend down the body, terminating in curved relief bands that emphasise its elegant shape. The lower section displays an irregular cream-coloured glaze transition above the unglazed foot, providing an interesting contrast to the glossy amber surface. A substantial decorative piece combining historical Chinese ceramic influences with bold sculptural ornamentation.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

The Liao Dynasty (907-1125) is recognised for its distinctive ceramic vessels, including amber-glazed wares and forms influenced by the traditions of northern China and the Khitan people. Decorative features such as applied relief ornamentation, rounded bodies and prominent handles are associated with historical Chinese pottery. This 20th-century example reflects those earlier design influences and should be regarded as a Liao style interpretation rather than a period original. Its unusual form and warm monochrome glaze make it appealing to collectors of Chinese decorative ceramics and historical revival pottery.
