DESCRIPTION

An early 18th century Chinese porcelain dish decorated in the distinctive Milk and Blood palette associated with Kangxi period export porcelain. The central reserve depicts an elegant figural scene from the Romance of the Western Chamber, with figures gathered beside architectural elements in a garden setting. The broad border is finely painted with alternating floral sprays and stylized fruit motifs in iron red, soft enamels and gilt highlights. The reverse carries additional iron red floral decoration around the pale glazed body. A decorative example of Chinese export porcelain with an attractive scalloped profile and detailed narrative subject.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Milk and Blood porcelain is a distinctive group of Chinese export wares characterized by iron red decoration enriched with softer enamel colors and gilding. Narrative scenes derived from Chinese literature, including the Romance of the Western Chamber, were particularly appealing decorative subjects on Kangxi period export porcelain.
