Chinese export Grisaille Porcelain cup, delicately painted in black enamel with a European riverside scene depicting a
couple fishing.The subject is after an engraving by Jacopo Amigoni (1675–1752) titled “Aqua”, from the celebrated
series representing the Four Elements.The rim is enriched with a finely detailed gilt and iron-red scroll border.

Collector’s Notes:
During the Qianlong period, Chinese workshops produced sophisticated wares for the European market, often
copying engravings by leading Western artists.Grisaille decoration was especially admired for its painterly quality
and close resemblance to European prints, making such pieces highly sought after by collectors of Chinese Export
Porcelain.
