DESCRIPTION

A Chinese ceramic standing female figure traditionally presented as Guanyin, modeled holding a long lotus stem and dressed in flowing robes. The figure is richly finished in deep cobalt blue, turquoise green, amber and cream sancai-style glazes. Sculptural details include the elaborate headdress, pendant necklace, folded robes and lotus flower. The underside is unglazed and bears an impressed CHINA mark, with the aged glaze surface and strong color contrasts giving the piece considerable decorative character.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Sancai-style ceramics draw upon the celebrated Chinese tradition of using contrasting lead glazes in green, amber and related tones. Later decorative figures continued this colorful aesthetic, often combining traditional Chinese subjects with expressive modeling and strongly pooled glazes.
