DESCRIPTION
A finely modeled Blanc de Chine porcelain figure depicting the laughing Buddha, Budai, seated in a relaxed pose.
The figure is rendered with a joyful expression, exposed stomach, and flowing robes characteristic of traditional representations.
Finished in a soft bluish-white glaze typical of Dehua kilns, with smooth modeling and well-defined facial features.
The hollow construction and visible kiln characteristics are consistent with traditional porcelain production techniques.
An attractive example of a popular Buddhist and folk religious subject from the Qing period.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Budai, known as the Laughing Buddha or God of Happiness, is associated with contentment, abundance, wisdom, and good fortune.
Based on the historical monk Qici, he became one of the most recognizable figures in Chinese Buddhist and folk tradition.
Blanc de Chine figures of Budai produced at Dehua were widely collected both in China and abroad for their serene appearance and fine craftsmanship.
Examples from the Qing period remain sought after by collectors of Chinese porcelain and religious art.
