DESCRIPTION
A hand carved Chinese alabaster figure depicting Laozi, the revered Taoist philosopher and immortal. The figure is shown standing in flowing robes with an expressive face and long beard, mounted on a carved circular plinth. The soft translucent alabaster displays attractive natural colour variation. The base has been drilled, indicating the figure was previously converted for use as a lamp.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Figures of Laozi have long been popular in Chinese decorative arts, symbolising wisdom, longevity, and harmony. During the 20th century, carved alabaster figures were produced both for display and, in some cases, adapted into decorative table lamps for the export market.
