DESCRIPTION
A colorful 19th century Chinese Qing Dynasty embroidered Mandarin rank badge featuring a richly caparisoned elephant at the center. The elephant stands upon a stylized rock above rolling waves and is surrounded by scrolling cloud formations against a vivid red ground. Its elaborate saddle cloth and ceremonial ornament are worked in yellow, blue, green, cream and orange threads, creating a particularly decorative composition. The scene is enclosed by a geometric and floral embroidered border and presented in a gilt frame with a pierced Chinese-style hanging mount.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
The elephant has a long tradition as an auspicious image in Chinese decorative art, associated with strength, peace and good fortune. Combined with clouds, waves and ceremonial ornament, the subject reflects the symbolic visual language widely employed in Qing Dynasty textiles and court-related decorative arts.
