DESCRIPTION

A finely potted Thai Sukhothai covered bowl with a domed lid surmounted by a pointed finial. The exterior of both bowl and cover is decorated in iron oxide with alternating floral medallions and geometric panel motifs beneath a pale cream glaze. The interior is simply glazed, while the foot ring remains unglazed in the traditional manner. A well-preserved example of Sukhothai stoneware with balanced proportions and attractive painted decoration.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Sukhothai ceramics were produced in Thailand between the 14th and 16th centuries and were traded extensively throughout Southeast Asia. Iron oxide painted wares are admired for their bold decorative schemes and represent an important tradition alongside the region’s celebrated celadon production.
