DESCRIPTION
A decorative pair of Japanese porcelain candlesticks dating to the Meiji period, richly painted with detailed figural scenes, landscape elements and elaborate textile-inspired patterns. The shaped bases are bordered in red and gilt, while the tall stems incorporate brown floral bands and extensive gilded ornament. Each candlestick terminates in a shaped drip tray and polygonal candle socket decorated with contrasting geometric panels. The dense polychrome enamelling and extensive gilt highlights give the pair the ornate character associated with Japanese export wares of the period.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Japanese Meiji period export porcelain was often produced in elaborate Western forms while retaining distinctly Japanese figural subjects and decorative patterns. Pairs of ornamental candlesticks combine a European functional form with the detailed enamelling and gilding favored in late 19th century Japanese decorative arts.
