DESCRIPTION

Japanese porcelain plate decorated in underglaze cobalt blue in the Kraak style. The central reserve features flowering chrysanthemum sprays and scrolling foliage surrounded by segmented geometric border panels. The reverse is painted with flowing scroll motifs in blue. An attractive early Edo export porcelain example with refined hand painted decoration.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Japanese Kraak style porcelains of the Edo period were heavily influenced by earlier Chinese export wares produced for foreign markets. These blue and white plates became highly sought after in Europe during the 17th century. Collectors value them for their transitional aesthetics and historic trade significance.
