DESCRIPTION
A Japanese Meiji Period cloisonne vase of slender bottle form, finished with a distinctive lime green enamel ground. The principal decoration depicts a bird among flowering branches above a colorful arrangement of chrysanthemums and other flowers, worked in multicolored enamels with fine metal outlines. The reverse carries a more restrained floral and foliage design. Decorative borders encircle the flared mouth, while metal mounts finish the rim and foot. An attractive example with strong color and traditional Japanese naturalistic decoration.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Japanese cloisonne reached a particularly accomplished level during the Meiji Period, when workshops produced richly colored enamel wares for both domestic and export markets. Bird and flower subjects were especially popular and reflect the strong influence of traditional Japanese nature imagery.
