DESCRIPTION
A small Japanese Arita porcelain hand holder traditionally used with scroll paintings, dating to the Meiji period. The cylindrical body is decorated in underglaze blue with circular medallions containing stylized wave patterns and Japanese characters, framed by simple blue line borders. The upper surface repeats the medallion decoration, while the underside has a central recessed opening and an unglazed surrounding edge. Its compact form and restrained blue and white decoration give the piece an appealing utilitarian character associated with traditional Japanese scroll handling and display.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Porcelain accessories made for the handling and appreciation of scroll paintings represent an interesting specialist area of Japanese decorative arts. Small functional objects such as this combine practical use with the established Arita tradition of underglaze blue porcelain decoration.
