DESCRIPTION

An attractive early 19th-century English ironstone plate attributed to Miles Mason, dating to circa 1820. The plate features an elaborate all-over floral decoration inspired by Chinese Famille Verte porcelain, with large iron red chrysanthemum-like flowers surrounded by scrolling foliage, smaller blossoms and gilded ornamental details. The vivid green ground is finely dotted in black, creating a textured visual effect that contrasts with the bold floral motifs and white reserves. The decoration extends across the entire front surface, forming a richly patterned and balanced composition. The reverse is finished in white glaze and bears an impressed M. Mason mark. A decorative example of early English ironstone with strong Oriental influence and characteristic Georgian-period colouring.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Miles Mason was an important figure in the development of English ceramics during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly in the production of Oriental-inspired wares. His work and the subsequent Mason family enterprise contributed to the popularity of durable ironstone china decorated in Chinese export styles. Famille Verte inspired patterns, combining green grounds, iron red enamels and gilded ornament, remain desirable among collectors of early English ceramics. The impressed M. Mason mark adds interest to this colourful example.
