DESCRIPTION
An unusual antique English papier mache snuff box modeled in the form of a clam shell. The exterior features deeply molded radiating ribs across the lid and underside, with corresponding fluted decoration around the sides. Its black surface has developed considerable wear and patination, revealing warm brown tones beneath and giving the box a distinctive aged character. The hinged construction opens to a simple dark interior. A tactile and decorative example of early 19th century personal tobacco ware.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Papier mache was used in Britain for lightweight decorative and functional objects during the Georgian and Victorian periods, including snuff boxes and small personal accessories. Shell forms were particularly suited to molded construction and provided an attractive naturalistic design. This example has strong visual character from its pronounced ribbing and extensively aged surface.
