DESCRIPTION

An English 19th century desk seal with a finely turned dark wood handle and brass seal matrix. The handle has an elegant baluster form with moulded ring details leading to a circular brass matrix with a serrated outer edge. The matrix is engraved with a stylized monogram or initial intended for making a personal impression in sealing wax. The dark aged wood and naturally patinated brass give the piece an attractive period appearance. A compact and characterful example of a traditional Victorian writing desk accessory.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Personal desk seals were commonly used during the 19th century to authenticate and secure private correspondence with sealing wax. Turned wood examples fitted with personalized brass matrices are collected today as attractive examples of Victorian writing equipment and social history.
