DESCRIPTION

An attractive British Art Deco sterling silver mounted cut crystal salt shaker dating to 1930. The tall tapered crystal body is decorated with vertical facet cutting and a geometric star-cut band around the upper section. It is fitted with a substantial silver shaker top pierced with decorative star-shaped openings and finished with a raised central finial. The silver bears the E J H maker’s mark for E. J. Houlston, a Birmingham maker recorded during the first half of the 20th century, together with the Birmingham assay marks and date letter F for 1930. The combination of clear cut crystal and aged silver gives the piece a distinctive period appearance.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

E. J. Houlston is recorded as a Birmingham silver maker active during the early to mid 20th century. This fully hallmarked 1930 example combines traditional Birmingham silver work with the geometric cut glass and streamlined decorative character associated with the Art Deco period.
