DESCRIPTION

An attractive 20th-century Staffordshire porcelain plate, decorated with a striking cobalt blue and white radial stripe pattern. The bold blue bands extend from the central well towards the gently scalloped rim, creating a distinctive symmetrical composition inspired by traditional Oriental and European decorative ceramics. The white centre features a small iron-red armorial-style emblem, providing an elegant contrast to the vivid cobalt blue decoration. The plate has a shallow rounded profile, a softly shaped rim and a plain glazed reverse without a visible manufacturer’s mark. A decorative example combining traditional blue and white colouring with an unusual geometric design.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Staffordshire ceramic manufacturers have a long tradition of producing Oriental-inspired wares, drawing upon Chinese porcelain patterns and decorative techniques. Cobalt blue decoration, scalloped forms and armorial-style motifs remained popular in English ceramics well into the 20th century. This plate reflects that decorative tradition, offering an appealing addition to collections of Staffordshire pottery, blue and white ceramics and Chinoiserie-inspired tableware.
