📜 Description
This fine souvenir saucer was made by W.H. Goss, one of the most famous English makers of heraldic porcelain, and depicts the arms of Funchal, Madeira — the capital city of the Portuguese island known for its wine and maritime history. The piece features a bright green shield topped with a golden mural crown and flanked by olive and grape vines, symbolising peace and prosperity. The gilt-edged border and fine transfer printing typify Goss quality.

Collector’s Notes: Heraldic crested ware by Goss became popular among Victorian travellers visiting British and European ports. Pieces like this — representing Madeira’s Funchal — are particularly desirable as examples of early tourist souvenir ceramics, merging heraldic artistry with the golden age of travel.
